The company is headquartered in San Francisco, with the opening of its Dublin office marking its third location worldwide.

Founded in 2015, OpenAI dominated headlines last year following the creation of its AI tool, ChatGPT. The service broke the record for the fastest-growing user base on the internet, gaining 100 million monthly users in January this year, just a month after it was initially launched.

That record has since been broken again following the release of Meta’s Threads app.

Since then, the chatbot has sparked major data-collection concerns as well as plagiarism fears by universities, with Italy going as far as to temporarily ban the use of ChatGPT over a number of privacy concerns. 

“We plan to grow a team through this year in Ireland that will propel our operations, trust and safety, go-to-market, security engineering, and legal work as part of our ongoing commitment to better serve the European market,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

“Ireland blends a talented workforce with support for innovation and responsible business growth. We’re excited for this partnership as we expand in Europe.”

Welcoming the decision, Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Simon Coveney said that in order for Ireland to benefit from AI, “it is essential to ensure that we have a strong, supportive ecosystem in place and we believe that companies such as OpenAI operating in Ireland can help build on our foundation to support emerging AI research and innovation, and ensure our workforce is well prepared.”

Speaking on its new office, OpenAI said it was ready to work with the government to support its National AI Strategy, with the company already taking its first steps to provide access to its technology.

In addition, the chatbot creator said it will offer mentorship to Irish youth accelerator Patch, a non-profit that supports exceptional 16-21-year-olds by having them build and learn through their own entrepreneurial projects.
